Swedish Massage Therapy
Swedish massage is often used interchangeably as massage therapy in the U.S., since it is the most popular type of massage here.
It involves using long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements. Therapists will use massage lotion or oil.
If you have never tried massage before, we recommend going with this option first — it is extremely relaxing and gentle. Be prepared to take a nap afterwards!
Deep Tissue Massage
This kind of massage might work for you, if you suffer from:
- postural problems (don’t we all — after a day in front of a computer!)
- repetitive strain
- chronically tight or painful muscles
- recovery from injury
The massage therapist uses slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle. Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.
Be aware that you might feel sore for one to two days after deep tissue massage.
